The College of Central Florida’s Musical Theatre Department will collaborate with (F)Actor Theatre Company to present “[title of show],” Friday and Saturday, July 26-27, starting at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, July 28, at 3 p.m., in the Black Box Theatre located in the Dassance Fine Arts Center, 3001 S.W. College Road.

“[title of show]” is about two self-confessed nobodies in New York who make a pact to write an original musical and submit it to a festival in three weeks. As the deadline looms the team decides to set off on a unique musical adventure: writing a musical about writing a musical. In this intelligent, playful, loveable musical, the audience is treated to an insider’s look at the tough work of being a creative artist. The music and lyrics are by Jeff Bowen and the book is written by Hunter Bell.

This show is directed by Janet Shelley from West Port High School’s Marion County Center of the Arts and is produced with special permission from Rogers and Hammerstein Theatricals.  Music director is Jason Longtin, associate professor of music at CF, and scenic designer is Joey Coombs, CF graduate. The show was a Tony nominee for Best Book of a Musical in 2009.

This show contains adult content and language, and is recommended for audiences age 21 and above. Tickets are $18. Purchase your tickets early due to limited seating in the Black Box Theatre. The College of Central Florida is conducting Health Sciences program information sessions this month and in July. Potential students must attend a session before applying to any of the programs.

Sessions provide details about admissions criteria, program requirements, costs and more, including the limited-access component. While any student meeting minimum criteria is encouraged to apply, not all applicants may be accepted. A point system is used to score all applications. Residents in CF’s service district of Marion, Citrus and Levy counties will receive residency points in the point system.

There is no waiting list for any of the health science programs and some programs have part-time enrollment options and offer evening/weekend classes.

The Appleton Museum of Art, College of Central Florida, joins museums nationwide in participating in the 10th summer of Blue Star Museums, a program that provides free admission to our nation’s active-duty military personnel and their families now through Sept. 1. The Appleton is pleased to extend this offer to Veterans.

Blue Star Museums is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in collaboration with Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums nationwide. First Lady of the United States Melania Trump and Second Lady of the United States Karen Pence are honorary co-chairs of Blue Star Museums 2019. This year’s participating organizations include fine art, science, history and children’s museums, as well as zoos, aquariums, gardens and more. The free admission program is available for those currently serving in the United States Military — Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard — as well as members of the Reserves, National Guard, U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps, and up to five family members. The Appleton Museum of Art, College of Central Florida, will present the annual Museum Day and Education Open House event on Saturday, July 6, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. There is no fee to attend.

The website RNCareers.org has ranked the College of Central Florida among the top 10 nursing programs in Florida and one of the best in the nation.

The website evaluated 1,892 Registered Nurse programs on a number of factors important to nursing students including first-time passing rates on the licensure examination, accreditation, program offerings, cost, graduation rate and institutional ranking. CF ranked ninth with a score of 93.49 percent for best Associate Degree in Nursing.

“CF is committed to providing robust academic programs, including nursing, that lead to high-skill, high-wage careers,” said Dr. Jim Henningsen, CF president. “This ranking confirms the quality and affordability of our nursing program, and our commitment to growing a health care workforce that serves our community.”

Nursing is one of the fastest growing academic programs at CF. Ninety-seven percent of CF students passed their certification exam on their first attempt in 2018, and CF has a 100 percent job placement rate for nursing graduates.

The Appleton Museum of Art, College of Central Florida, will present the fifth annual “Mobile Photography Contest & Exhibition,” with a call for entries from June 3-16.

The Appleton challenges you to be inspired by three themes-Landscapes, In the Museum and My Kid Took That-and submit your mobile photos for a contest and exhibition. All ages are welcome to participate and submit up to two photos in each category. Photos must be taken with a mobile phone and be representative of the categories. Photos will be printed and displayed in the Appleton with a special section for the top photo from each category. The photos will remain on view through Sept. 22.

Photos will be juried and prizes awarded during a reception on Tuesday, July 2, 5-7 p.m. Awards will be announced at 6 p.m.; winners will be notified in advance.

From June 3-16, email photos in jpeg format to AppletonMuseum@cf.edu; include the category in the subject line and your full name in the body of the email. Photos must be sent via email. Entries submitted by mail or through Facebook or other social media will not be accepted.

Submitting to more than one category? Please send separate emails for each category. And remember, no more than two photos per category will be accepted.

Entries will be juried by a member of the community, and winning photos will be selected based on creativity, quality, responsiveness to the category and overall impact. Winners will be notified before the reception. All entries will be printed and displayed in the museum. For ease of printing, photos will be cropped to square or 4 x 5 inches. There are no guarantees for special printing for panoramas.

The Appleton Museum of Art, College of Central Florida, will present two exhibitions this summer from June 8-Oct. 20, “Do Not Bleach: Stephanie Brown” and “Urban Chatter: Sharon Kerry-Harlan.”

Through a series of mixed media installations, “Do Not Bleach” expresses and encourages melanin positivity, whether one is dark-skinned, light-skinned, or somewhere in between. The exhibition will also feature a selfie interactive station, where visitors are encouraged to try on one of Brown’s signature “Do Not Bleach” T-shirts and take a photo. Shirts will be available for purchase in the Appleton Store and are part of the artist’s public art campaign that allows people to advocate for their melanin. Other installations include “Soaps in Various Skin Tones,” which references Fenty Beauty, pop icon Rhianna’s cosmetics brand that is known for its inclusivity of all skin tones.

The youngest of five siblings, Brown grew up a first-generation American in Delray Beach. Her parents are Jamaican immigrants. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from Savannah College of Art and Design and received her master’s degree in interdisciplinary arts and museum studies certificate from the University of Michigan.

On view at the same time, “Urban Chatter” features the work of Sharon Kerry-Harlan. Using thread and sun-baked cloth, “the density of contemporary city living,” provides the inspiration for

this series. The figures and faces seem to meld abstraction, African sculptures and ritual masks among mid-century urban music references from the Harlem jazz scene. Born in Miami, the artist splits her time between Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, and Hollywood, Florida. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Marquette University and studied art at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Her body of work includes textiles, mixed media and photography.

College of Central Florida is offering 40 $1,000 merit scholarships to Levy County students graduating in May to attend the CF Jack Wilkinson Levy Campus.

Scholarships awarded include $500 for fall 2019 and $500 for spring 2020. The scholarships are made available by funds raised for the Promise for the Future Campaign, aimed at building and enrolling students in the first permanent higher education facility in Levy County.

To be eligible, students must graduate from a Levy County high school in 2019 and enroll at the CF Levy Campus for the 2019 fall semester. Applicants must have a minimum high school GPA of 2.5 and enroll in at least six credit hours each semester with at least one on-site class held at the Levy Campus.

The campus located at 15390 N.W. Highway 19, Chiefland, features a comprehensive student center with enrollment services, counseling and advising, financial aid, testing, computer stations, a campus bookstore, student lounge and student life office, a health and wellness area, five fully equipped multipurpose classrooms, a large multidiscipline science lab, and three state-of-the-art computer labs for college credit and corporate education courses.
