About CF

Sustainability

The College of Central Florida not only strives to be good stewards of the environment, but also personal health. CF’s Sustainability & Tree Advisory Committee works to reduce CF’s environmental footprint. The group of faculty, students, staff and administrators works to promote sustainability on campus and beyond. Recycling and increasing sustainability awareness education efforts continue at CF.

Tree Campus

For more than 10 years, CF has earned the Tree Campus USA recognition for its dedication to campus forestry management and environmental stewardship.

Tree Campus USA is a national program that honors colleges, universities and their leaders for promoting healthy management of their campus forests and for engaging the community in environmental stewardship. Tree Campus USA is a program of the Arbor Day Foundation.

CF meets the five core standards of tree care and community engagement in order to receive Tree Campus USA status. The standards are establishing a campus tree advisory committee; providing a campus tree-care plan; dedicating annual expenditures on the campus tree-care plan; participating in an Arbor Day observance; and instituting a service-learning project to engage students.

LEED Status

The College of Central Florida’s sustainability practices include single-stream recycling, use of LED site lighting and interior lighting, use of room motion sensors to control lighting based on room occupancy, use of a Building Automated System to schedule HVAC systems when buildings are occupied, as well as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and FGBC (Florida Green Building Coalition) projects. The college has two LEED Silver Certified buildings, a renovation/addition at Founders Hall on the Ocala Campus completed in 2009, and a LEED for New Construction building, the Citrus Learning and Conference Center, also completed in 2009.

The college has one FGBC building, the St. John Educational Center, completed in 2017 and located on our Levy Campus. The college has entered into an Energy Performance Contract with Siemens Industry to add a new West campus chilled water plant, and plans to create a virtual plant and update underground chilled water infrastructure, perform collegewide LED lighting retrofits, add O2 Prime Air Handler Unit improvements at several buildings, perform upgrades to the Citrus Campus HVAC systems, and perform automation improvements to the Appleton Museum HVAC system.
