You must score a 3 or higher on the AP Government and Politics: United States Exam OR score a 4 or higher on the AP United States History Exam to fulfill the Civic Literacy requirement.

CLEP Resources

The CLEP: American Government exam is a great option for high school and prospective/currently enrolled college students whom would like to fulfill the Civic Literacy requirement without taking an extra course.

CLEP Exams are offered at all three College of Central Florida Testing Centers. To see the hours, locations, and contact information for each site, please see our Hours & Locations Page.

Cost: $87 to CLEP (CollegeBoard) and $25 to Testing Center -- $112 Total

CLEP Official Study Guide: The Ocala Campus Testing Center has several copies of the CLEP Official Study Guide that can be checked out by students if they would like to study for their exam. This study guide provides practice questions for all 33 CLEP exams (including American Government). Or alternatively, you can purchase a study guide for yourself on the CLEP Website.

Modern States: Modern States is a charitable organization that will pay for you to take the CLEP exam. They offer free, CLEP-approved online courses that will help you prepare for the exam. Once you have completed the course, you can request a CLEP voucher and use your voucher code as payment when you register for the exam. CLEP Testing for Military personnel, veterans, and families: You may be eligible to have your CLEP registration fees covered by DANTES (Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Educational Support). For more information, please visit the CLEP Website for Military Benefits.

Ready to take the test? Register and pay for your test on the CLEP Registration Page. Print out your registration ticket and take it to your local CF Testing Center on test day. Make sure you bring your Photo ID!

Scores: You must score a 50 or higher on the CLEP American Government exam to fulfill the Civic Literacy requirement.


College of Central Florida Civic Literacy Courses

  • AMH2020 United States History Since 1877 (3 credits)

An interpretive survey of United States history since the end of Reconstruction. Major topics include the Economic Revolution, Imperialism and America's rise as a world power, World War I, the Great Depression, the New Deal, World War II and its aftermath. This course may be available online or as a hybrid. This course satisfies the Civics Literacy requirement.

  • POS2041 American National Government (3 credits)

Particular attention is devoted to the United States Constitution and political culture, political institutions, political behavior and current issues. This course may be offered online or as a hybrid.


State University System Requirements

If you plan to transfer to or plan to enroll in a State University System institution prior to graduation from FCS institution, you can chose to utilize one of the options above or choose to complete the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Naturalization Test. You can take this test at the State University where you wish to transfer.
